- Meander Formation in a Tributary of Mississippi River, U.S.A.
- Over time, the neck of the meander loop narrows to the point where the river cuts through in order to shorten its course and the meander loop is abandoned. When this happens a small lake is formed called an oxbow lake. The lake eventually fills with silt and becomes marsh land and finally a meander scar. The Mudjatik River in northern Saskatchewan has several oxbow lakes.
