Competitions Concordia Popsicle Bridge Building Competition Annually Concordia University in Montreal holds the Concordia Popsicle Bridge Building Competition. In 2001, the competition included more than 35 universities from all across North America, including a team from France. The bridge must be made entirely of wooden popsicle sticks, wooden toothpicks, dental floss and white glue. A screw jack style mechanism called "the Crusher" is used to determine the load the bridge can sustain. Bridges are also judged on the basis of creativity and looks.
Interesting Fact: The University of New Brunswick set a new record in 1999 when their bridge was able to carry a load of 2040.5 kg. Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race Founded in 1974 in Alberta, the GNCTR is one of the largest North American engineering competitions, attracting competitors from Universities from across Canada and the United States, as well as overseas teams. Competing teams design, build and race sleds with a concrete running surface. Toboggans cannot weigh over 136 Kg, and the design is required to include a specialized braking system and a safety roll bar. Entries are judged on concrete mix design, brake design, overall sled design and sled aesthetics. Points are also awarded on the race hill for top speed, shortest braking distance and the "most spectacular" run. Teams are also required to present a technical paper and exhibit outlining the aspects of their design.
Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition This competition encourages young engineers to broaden their understanding of materials. The winner of CNCCC would go on to compete for Canada at the American competition. The competition is hosted by a different university each year. Trivia In 1850, a man named Lambot constructed a concrete boat which some consider to be the start of reinforced concrete usage. CSCE Student Papers Competition Each year the CSCE holds a papers competition for both undergraduate students and graduate students from Civil Engineering Departments across Canada. |
