Air Quality

A group of researchers from Canada, the USA, Japan and Europe are studying the relationship between snow, sea salt, sunlight and ozone in the Arctic. They are finding that the chemistry of snow actually helps clean the air.

Green-house Gas

Canada is considered the world's third largest (based on population) producer of green-house gas. Environmental engineers are working hard to reduce this.

A study is underway to try and reduce the amount of Portland cement used in concrete production by substituting industrial waste products. Portland cement is made by combining lime with clay or shale at extremely high temperatures. This process expels a significant amount of water and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Methane and Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Landfills

This is a major source of green-house gas that is being looked at by environmental engineers.
