Landfills

Clay liners are used to prevent leachate (the liquid that settles to the bottom of a landfill) from getting into the groundwater. Sometimes collection pipes are installed along the sides and bottom of a new landfill to collect the leachate. This leachate is hauled each day to a treatment plant. There it is processed to the point where it is safe to be pumped into the wastewater treatment plants for further treatment.
