Cantilever Bridges

The cantilever bridge is a bridge that can be used to span great distances. The beams are balanced at their centres on piers. The piers have narrow bases which widen to support the roadway.

Firth of Forth Cantilever Bridge
     The Firth of Forth Bridge was opened for traffic in 1890 after seven years of construction. The Forth Bridge consists of two approach viaducts, three double cantilevers resting on two piers near the shore, and on a central pier on the island of Inchgarvie, pllus two girder spans, suspended between the ends of the central and side cantilevers over the channels.
