The engineers designed the bridge to withstand the harsh environment of Northumberland Strait and to last 100 years.

In the design phase, civil engineers studied the possibility of a progressive collapse of the bridge if one of its piers was hit by a ship or damaged in some other way. Their study showed that, given the design, a progressive collapse could not occur.

Traveller information signs are in place to inform users of possible hazards on the bridge.

They also designed the bridge with the safety of both the road travelers and the seafarers in mind. If you look really closely you can spot the warning lights placed on each pier.
