Transportation Engineering
Mountain Highways

Civil engineers are concerned with the safety of the wild life whose home we've invaded. Special openings are placed in the concrete guiderail to allow small mammals and waterfowl to cross.

Civil engineers have to decide the best method of protecting the animals. Sometimes it is economical and convenient to construct animal pathways under the highways using metal or concrete culverts.

In the last few years, engineers have started constructing animal crossings over the highways. There are two of these crossing in the Banff National Park.

With the help of sturdy, high fences, animals are encouraged to use the crossings made especially for them. The fence is a variable size mesh game fence 2.4 m high with a buried chain link apron.

Wetlands and fish habitat have also been reconstructed to replace the areas impacted by highway construction.
