These two pictures show a very small part of the East Maui Irrigation System (EMI). This system of weirs and ditches collects rain water which falls on the mountains and directs it to central Maui.


The Hawaiian people grow taro plants in terraced gardens. The Taro requires a constant supply of fresh water so the water is piped into the top field and drains into each subsequent field.
